Embrapa releases a free electronic version of the Brazilian System of Soil Classification

Researchers, students and farmers can already celebrate! On August 14, 2018, during the XXI World Congress of Soil Science, the Brazilian Company of Agricultural Research (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária – Embrapa) released the 5th revised and enlarged version of Brazilian System of Soil Classification (Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação dos Solos – SiBCS). The best part of it is that the book has now a new version in english, that is also available for free download in e-book format. Download here.

Among the improvements made in this new edition, some highlights are adjusts, corrections and redefinitions of basic concepts regarding the definition of soil, horizons and diagnostic attributes, as well as, elimination or addition of soil classes at all categorical levels.

According to Jose Francisco Lumbreras, a researcher of Embrapa Soils, these are quite technical changes, causing a great impact in the mapping, surveying and in soil classification.

It is worth remembering that the new version gained special prominence due to the Nacional Soil Program of Brazil (Programa Nacional de Solos do Brasil – PronaSolos), that was also officialized this year. The program has the mission to map soils of the Brazilian territory in scales more detailed than the current ones, with the support of teams formed by professionals of several states around the country.
