Brazil is elected responsible for the pillar of harmonization of methods, measurement and indicators

Resource: SBCS

As everyone already knows, sustainability is on the top of discussions, right? But, this is not only a whim of modern society, it is the responsibility of preserving our resources, so the next generations do not suffer the consequences of environmentally wrong choices.

Thus, soil management can not stay out of those sustainable practices. After all, soil is a natural resource of extreme importance for our survival on Earth, as we already elucidated here in InteraSolo.

It is in this sustainability vibe that we came to inform that Brazil was elected the agent of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, being responsible for providing globally representative information about soil properties, by field (observation and description of soil profiles) and analytical (laboratory) data, as well as derived products such as digital maps.

Calm down, we will recapitulate everything that has happened, to leave you into all.

The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) of FAO happened in Rome last week. The ITPS was established at the Global Soil Partnership, which took place at FAO Headquarters in 2013. The panel is composed of 27 soil experts from all over the world, including the Brazilian Lucia Helena Anjos, Professor of the Department of Soils of the Institute of Agronomy of UFRRJ (Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro).

The experts meet annually to seek measures that can revert the soil degradation, as well as promote the idea of healthy soils worldwide.

Professor Lucia Helena was elected to preside the Pillar 5: harmonization of methods, measurements and indicators for sustainable managements and protection of soil resources. She reported on the importance of Brazil’s nomination to coordinate this pillar on the valuation of tropical soils, on the knowledge of the peculiarities of Brazilian soils, and on its relevance in the global agricultural panorama.
