Meet the Museum of Soils in Roraima

Source: UFRR

Have you ever visited a museum of soil? How about knowing a little bit more about the Museum of Soils in Roraima? Well, today we will talk about this important instrument of learning, located in the Center of Agricultural Sciences of Campus Cauame of the Federal University of Roraima (Universidade Federal de Roraima – UFRR)!

The Museum of Soils of UFRR was founded in the year 2011, and officially inaugurated in 2013. The collection of the museum has monoliths from the 13 soils Classes of the Brazilian Soil Classification System (Sistema Brasileiro de Classisficação de Solos), as well as samples of rocks and minerals, among other pieces. These materials make it easier for professors to teach soil science and natural resources in general, constituting an excellent didactic tool, in which morphological attributes of the main classes of the Roraima State soils, such as color, transition between horizons, depth, and stoniness can be observed by students and/or visitors. These observations have a major importance in the understanding of the concepts related to soil genesis, such as soil formation factors and processes, relation between soil and landscape, etc. The main objective of the museum is to make society aware that soil is an essential component to environment and, therefore, essential to life, which must be preserved and protected from degradation.

The museum hosts school groups and other interested parties. To schedule a tour, please call +55 (95) 3627-2573 or +55 (33) 9114-0707.
